Lacquer art restorer HIRO KIYOKAWA

Kiyokawa has been working as a “lacquer art restorer” using lacquer as a successor to the traditional techniques established in the Edo period for 50 years. It covers a wide range of subjects, including cultural properties, shrines and temples, Buddhist statues, ceramics, lacquerware, and antiques, and is highly trusted by academics. With the aim of widely introducing traditional construction methods, he presides over Kintsugi classes in Kyoto and Tokyo, and is well-received for his keen five senses and experience gained over many years as a craftsman, as well as his outstanding techniques using only natural materials, which are also applicable to the restoration of cultural properties. Currently, nearly 100 students attending his class.
Appeared on TV Tokyo in 2018, British public broadcaster BBC in 2020, and NHK World in 2023. In addition, our activities have been featured in various media such as magazines and newspapers. In 2022, at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he performed at Benedict’s XVI Hall in Vatican City, and also performed in various locations in Italy. Through his corporate activities and NPO activities, he is enthusiastic about creating successors and preserving culture.

Kiyokawa’s first work of writing will be reprinted

This book introduces the history of kintsugi, craftsmanship culture, aesthetic sense and sensibility of kintsugi to people both in Japan and abroad, as well as his designs that express his aesthetic sense and sensibilities, as well as the reasons why it has gained popularity overseas, along with impressive anecdotes. This is a book where you can learn about the attraction of Kintsugi, which is not only beautiful.
