What if we saw the wear of time not as something negative but as something beautiful?

Kintsugi artist Hiroki Kiyokawa has been breathing new life into objects for 50 years and it has profoundly shaped his outlook on life. For the past 10 years he has been on a mission to share the process of kintsugi and its underlying spiritual stance with the wider world.

Embracing and celebrating impermanence is at the very core of kintsugi. Using the sap of the urushi lacquer tree, broken vessels are repaired and allowed a second life. Often highlighting their break lines in gold, so that their brokenness becomes an integral part of their beauty.

Through an essay and interview Kiyokawa san unpacks how we too would benefit from meeting the inevitable wear and tear of life with gentleness and compassion.
