On July 6, 2023, MIC hosted a demonstration and lecture on kintsugi in conjunction with a symposium of restorers in Faenza, a town in central Italy known for its ceramics production.
The event overcame flood damage to be held. The symposium attracted an audience of 120 people from all over Italy.
After the project in the Vatican at the end of last year, Kiyokawa visited Faenza, which he had long desired to do. After meeting with Ms.Claudia Casali, director of the International Museum of Ceramics in the center of town, the decision was made to hold a kintsugi performance in conjunction with the symposium.
The originally organized 20 seats were quickly filled, and a total of about 120 people, not only local artisans but also people coming a considerable distance, arrived to see the demonstration.
A month earlier, a torrential rain disaster caused extensive damage to the town. However, Kiyokawa’s message of encouragement through the spirituality of kintsugi was conveyed to everyone, including the director of the museum. She promised to cooperate in exhibiting a kintsugi booth at the Faenza International Ceramic Art Exhibition, which is held every two years.
